ACTE Board Member, Asia-Pacific |
ACTE Regional Chair, Asia-Pacific |
Dear Colleagues,
This year, I begin my term as ACTE Regional Chair for the Asia-Pacific region. It's a privilege to have this opportunity to serve this community. Like you, I look forward to a year of improvements in the performance of managed travel programmes, strengthened customer/supplier relationships and greater developments in the corporate travel industry.
ACTE continues to expand its reach across the Asia-Pacific region, building communities of customers and suppliers of business travel services, experts in related fields and industry thought-leaders. The recognition of its role in business travel means that more corporations are calling for ACTE-led initiatives.
In 2008, ACTE will add Tokyo and Mumbai to its global reach with content-rich educational events, and will hold its 7th Annual Education Conference in Singapore, 20-21 August. ACTE's community is truly an international one and our educational programmes are characterised by a fine balance of international, regional and local issues. Whether you are in Bangalore, Sydney or Shanghai, ACTE is keeping close watch on the developments affecting the business travel industry that are likely to be priorities for you and your organisation. ACTE is a critical source of business intelligence, a catalyst for solutions, and a facilitator of continued professional development for any executive with managed travel responsibilities.
I look forward to the prospect of working with you and serving our industry. It’s going to be an exciting year for all of us.
Best regards,
Georgie Farmer

Upcoming details will be released soon!
Celebrate ACTE’s 20th Anniversary at the ACTE Global Education Conference in Rome, a city that exemplifies classical education and the arts. Titled, “Corporate Travel in the Forefront,” the conference will pinpoint the most important issues in the business travel industry and offer senior-level executives the opportunity to find the solutions to their most pressing problems. Visit the conference website for details.
Welcome to 2008
The year is off to a flying start for the Asia-Pacific markets despite concerns about the US economy. The region's major markets are purring on the back of a successful 2007. Also worth noting is the increased openness among Japanese corporations to embrace globalisation and new ideas about management practices that come with it. This healthy dose of optimism and enthusiasm must be balanced with disciplined exercises of cost management, productivity monitoring and socially responsible decision-making. Every field of work requires this balance and the collaboration of those organisations which make up its system. Corporate travel is moving rapidly into an era where many suppliers' business operations are in a state of flux. Airlines are traversing new boundaries with new aircraft technology, hotels are discovering the ability to manage yields of their highly perishable room inventories more effectively, travel management companies are increasingly deploying IT to raise their value-quotient, non-traditional suppliers to travel purchasers are developing products poised to meet new business travel needs, and encircling these is the ascending priority of being in step with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals. Corporate travel procurement specialists and travel managers will have several balls up in the air, and will definitely have their work cut out for them in 2008.
The supply chain has always been the domain of the procurement specialist, but the call to extract maximum advantage from the supply network and the entrance of new vendors may mean the involvement of other business functions in procurement decisions. All business functions invited to a higher calling (i.e. becoming a strategic contributor) within organisations have to get accustomed to seeking advice from other functional units and even making concessions on 'true-blue' procurement objectives. Travel is well documented for having emotional strings attached to internal stakeholders, making it a unique indirect spend category and one that may be disturbing to procurement traditionalists. These challenges will be laid before the corporates and their supply chain partners.
In 2008, ACTE will work to facilitate discussions along these lines and introduce new considerations in the Asia-Pacific markets through its educational events. ACTE will also celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, marking two decades of industry initiative, government collaboration, and advanced support for corporate travel departments with intensified educational programs. Exciting initiatives are taking shape in the ACTE community with active involvement from all quarters of managed travel and related fields of expertise. This translates into new actionable knowledge and realizable value for your companies.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming education events.
Best wishes,
Kenneth Phua
